A complex sentence is a sentence that has an independent clause or main clause(a complete sentence which is very important) and at least one or more dependent or subordinate clauses(which is less important).

*An independent or main clause is a clause which can stand on its own in terms of meaning. Example; We will start the examination.

*A dependent or subordinate clause as the name implies, cannot stand on its own in terms of meaning but has to depend on the main clause for its meaning. Example; the invigilator arrives.

NB: The dependent clause in a complex sentence is usually introduced by subordinating conjunctions like because, until, as soon as, so that, when, although,if,unless, since,as,except, before, after, although, than, that, whenever, then,as in, whether  etc.

EXAMPLES: (1)We will start the examination when the invigilator arrives.

                            (main clause)                                                 (dependent clause)

(2)He failed the examination because he did not study.

TOPIC 2: LISTENING TO TELL THE MEANING OF WORDS IN CONTENT

The teacher is supposed to read a passage to the students on any contemporary issues and ask them to note important words they hear. In absence of that, the students are to read the passage on Appendix 4 page 230, on the topic What is fairness? of their New Concept English Book 1 and answer the Questions on unit 18 page 204.
