LISTENING COMPREHENSION (WEEK ONE)

WEEK ONE

Topic: 1) Listening Comprehension: listening to grasp main points and idea.

2) Words associated with Islamic religion

3) Listening comprehension: listening to identify speaker’s mood, tone and purpose.

Specific objective: by the end of the lesson, the students should be able to;

1) Identify the main points of the speech, irrelevant points and points of secondary importance

2) Discuss important aspects of other people’s religious beliefs

3) Identify a speaker’s mood, tone and purpose in oral speech

Topic I ( Listening to grasp main points and ideas in a speech)

• The main points/ideas in any given passage is usually the essential contents and the topic sentence. It summarizes what the passage is all about.
• Listening attentively is the foundation of all learning. It helps students to get maximum information from teachers and other students. It helps them to respond to statements and questions sensibly and follow class discussions with profitability. On the other hand, poor listening skills often result in misunderstanding and wrong responses.

Topic ii (words associated with Islamic religion)

• Religion is defined as the belief in and worship of a God or gods.
• Islamic religion is the region proclaimed by the prophet Mohammed and all the Muslim world.
• Some words associated with Islamic religion are:

            Koran, Mosque, Ablution, Hajj, Pilgrimage, minerat, Sheikh, Imam, Id-el Kabir, Salah,      Koran School.

Topic iii (Listening to identify speaker’s mood, tone and purpose)

The tone of the writer depicts his moods and ideas he wants to put across to his readers. It detects the writer’s attitude or feeling towards the subject talked about in the passage. The writer may present the subject in a humorous way, he may be satiric, cynical, indifferent, serious, and sober or he may be neutral in his feelings or attitudes. All of these, the writer can achieve in his written text through a careful selection of words and sentences, such selection reflects the tone and mood of the text. The author’s mood can be that of’ anger, happiness, doubt, disappointment, suspicion, excitement etc.

 b. Read the comprehension passage (listening comprehension passages) at the appendix 4 (back page of the New Concept English Book 1) on the topic “Corruption in Nigeria: Causes and solution and answer the questions on unit 1 page 16.

b. Find the meaning of this words in the dictionary and make good correct sentences with them. A. Koran B. Mosque C. Minerat D. Ablution E. Hajj

3) How do we identify a speaker’s mood, tone in a given passage
