*TOPIC: (a)Listening Comprehension: Listening to identify a speaker’s style.

               (b)Grammar: Compound sentence

*SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE: By the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:

(1)Listen to speeches attentively in order to identify a speaker’s style.

(2)Recognize and analyse the essential features of compound sentence.

 

                                                TOPIC 1: LISTENINGTO IDENTIFY A SPEAKER’S STYLE        

*Style can be defined as a typical way a speaker or writer uses in speaking or writing. Style here has to do with manner of writing or speaking contrasted with the subject matter. A writer can use different styles in writing like expository, narrative, descriptive etc. Hallmark of a good student is to be able to identify characteristics of the different style used by a writer.

           

                                                TOPIC 2:COMPOUND SENTENCE

A compound sentence is formed when two or more independent clauses are joined together by using co-ordinating conjunctions like ‘and’, ‘or’, ‘nor’, ‘but’, ‘yet’, ‘while’ etc.

                       Each part of the compound sentence is called clause. Each clause is independent because it can stand on its own. A compound sentence consists of two simple sentences joined together by coordinating conjunction. Examples:

1. The woman walked into the sitting room (simple sentence)

2. She found Olu sitting on a chair (simple sentence)

                                       ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

(A)The woman walked into the sitting room and found Olu sitting on a chair. (Compound sentence)

3. The boys left at 12pm.(simple sentence)

4. They got home early enough.(simple sentence)

                                    ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

(B)The boys left at 12pm and (they) got home early enough.(compound sentence)

5 .Nkem went to the market.(simple sentence)

6. She bought a lot of goods.(simple sentence)

                                    ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

(C)Nkem went to the market and bought a lot of goods.(compound sentence)

 

                                    EVALUATION AND ASSIGNMENT

            1) Read the passage on Appendix 4 (page 229) of their New Concept English Bk 1 on the topic ‘My Story’ answer the questions on unit 15,page 174. Take note of the writer’s style and write down in your book the style(s) used by the writer.

            2) What is compound sentence?

            3) Join the following clauses together using any of the following: and, but, or, while

            (a)Thief was caught. He was taken to the police station.

            (b)Mary is a nurse. John is a medical doctor.

            (c)You can save the money in the bank. You can keep it till tomorrow.

            (d)Nana loves swimming. Belema loves dancing.

            (e)Would you like a visit to the zoo? Would you prefer the amusement park?
