Specific Objectives: by the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:

1) Identify the topic sentence or sentences expressing the main idea of the passage.

2) Write out a connected speech for any occasion within their level of experiences

3) Identify details in a given passage and use them while writing a speech/story etc.

Topic 1 (Reading for summary

Summary is a brief statement of the main point of something. Summarizing a passage means reduction of original prose work (i.e) summarizing is how we reduce a large text to it’s essential; these are the gists, main points that are worth nothing and remembering. When you summarize, you remove all unnecessary material and focus on the heart of the matter using your own words.

The main things needed to write a good summary are;

1. Brevity 2. Relevance 3. Proper coverage of the passage 4. Clarity 5. Avoid repetition 6. Compression 7. Use your own words and good grammar.

In summary writing, do not: 1. Copy words for words 2. Get scanty in ideas 3. Write too much 4. Write incomplete sentences 5. Write down (almost) everything in the passage 6. Write ideas that are not expressed in the passage

 

Topic ii (Speech Writing)

Speech writing is a form of writing meant for presentation before a particular audience. Speech is a talk, especially a formal one about a particular subject given to a group of people, it is meant to be delivered orally.

Examples of speech to be delivered: 1. Prize giving/end of the year speech 2. Welcoming a new principal 3. Honoring an August Visitor 4. Declaring a ceremony or social gathering open 5. Receive or send off a collegue or a member of the staff an organization. 6. Wedding toast.

Features of a Speech

1. The title (must be in capital letter) 2. Identification data (for indicating the type of speech, speaker, occasion, places, dates, time and so on) 3. The salutation for recognition of members of the audience 4. The message (body) 5. Conclusion 6.The speaker signature 7. The speaker’s full name and designation.

Speech format (Title must be capital letters)

Topic iii (Listening to identify details)

  • Identify means to prove what something is while detail is a small particular fact or item.
  • Listening to identify details means words that signify the presentation of details such as; because, as a result of, for example, in other words etc.

Evaluation and assignment

1) A. What is summary?

b. Read the passage of page 169/170 of new concept English book on (Not the end of the road) and summarize in two sentences why the writer could not pay the tuition and other fees in the school.

2) a. What is speech writing?

b. Write a speech to be delivered at your morning Assembly on “The need for good study habits for successful performance in examinations.”

3) Read the comprehension passage on Appendix 4 ( the land is dying) on page 225 of New Concept English 1 and answer the questions that follows on unit 3 (page 43).
