TOPIC; PREFIXES AS WORD EXTENSION, MAKING FOR NEW MEANING
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES; By the end of today’s lesson, the students should be able to;
A. Define a prefix.
B. Give at least ten examples of a root word.
C. Use selected prefixes to form antonyms of the root words.
INTRODUCTION: Words can be grouped under various headings according to their forms ,sounds meanings and so on. One major source of word formation is known as affixation.affix is a letter or agroup of letters added to the beginning or the end of a word to change its meaning or the way it is used. Affixation can occur in two forms, namely: prefix and suffix.
PREFIXES
Prefix is a letter or a group of letters placed before a rootword to modifyits meaning. A prefix added to a word usually does not change the word class( the part of speech) of the root word. EG ; dis-,out-, un-, non-, mis-, il-, im-, bi-, extra-, super-,mal-, fore-, poly-, mono-, under-,etc.Knowing what a prefix means will help one understand the word to which the prefixisadded to.
