Meaning of Traffic Regulations

It is the rules that guide and direct the movement of vehicles and other road users along the roads. It also means the laws that guide motorists and road users in order to ensure their safety and the smooth flow of traffic.

Traffic Regulation for the Pedestrians

A pedestrian is a person who is walking on the road or an area provided as walk way on the road.

The following rules and regulations are required to observe and obey by pedestrians

  1. A pedestrian should wear reflective material clothes while walking on the road at night
  2. The pedestrian should use the pavement foot path
  3. A pedestrian should walk on the left of the road facing oncoming vehicle
  4. A pedestrian should not put ear speaker in his or her ear while walking on the road
  5. You should use pedestrian crossing or zebra crossing or foot bridges.
  6. Stay off the road if you hear the siren
  7. Always look left, right and left again before crossing the road.
  8. Do not cross the road between parked vehicles because other drivers may not see you.

Traffic Regulations for Motorists

  1. Motorist must drive a vehicle with a valid driver’s license.
  2. Motorist must obey all road signs signals.       
  3. Always fasten seat belt while driving
  4. Do not drink alcohol and still drive.
  5. Never drive while under the influence of drugs or alcoholic.
  6. Drive vehicles that are in good condition.
  7. Should not drive their vehicles without fire extinguisher, spare tyre and side mirrors.
  8. Must not use GSM phone while driving.
  9. Should not overload vehicle with goods while driving.
  10. Should not assault a road marshal in the performance of his duty.

Agencies that Manage and Enforce Traffic Rules

  1. Traffic warden.
  2. Federal high way police patrol.
  3. Federal Road Safety Corps or Commission (FRSC).
  4. Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC)
  5. Vehicle Inspection Officer (VIO).
