Specific objectives: By the end of this lesson, the students should be able to:

1. Define abuse of the internet
2. List different ways by which the internet can be abused

Abuse of the Internet: The word “abuse” means the improper way of doing things. Likewise, abuse of the internet means the improper way of using the internet. There are different ways by which the internet can be abused and these are:

1. Cyber bullying: This means using the internet to bully or intimidate, harass or threaten someone.
2. Internet Fraud: This involves using the internet for the purpose of tricking victims out of their money, properties and inheritance. Internet Fraud is popularly called “yahoo yahoo”.
3. Sending spam mails: This is another way the internet can be abused and misused whereby unsolicited bulk without verifiable link are sent to people in order to defraud them.
4. Plagiarism: This is defined as using someone’s ideas, words, music or video and transforming it into yours, making it look like you are the original owner of the work.
5. Piracy: This is one of the major abuse and misuse of the internet whereby someone makes use or reproduces another person’s work without being authorized to do that.
6. Creating and sending virus: virus is just like an infectious disease which replicates itself from one cell to another.    Likewise.    Computer virus is an abuse of computer which was created by some programmers with the intention of destroying documents and files inside the computer.
