WEEK 6: SATELLITE

TOPIC: Satellites.

A satellite is an object in space that orbit or circle around a bigger object. There are two kinds of satellites.

Natural  (such as moon orbiting the earth).

Artificial (such as international space station orbiting the earth).

There are dozens upon dozens of natural satellites in the solar system with almost every planet having at least one moon. If you look at the sky from your position on earth, you may see the sun in the day or moon and stars at night. You may not be able to view these objects properly with the naked eyes because they are far away. The  region of space outside the earth and above 160km is known as outer space.

Meaning of space.

Space generally refer to the environment outside the earth’s crust which stretches beyond our imagination.

Meaning of outer space.

This refer to the region lying beyond 160km above the earth’s surface. This region does not contain much air but contains dangerous radiations, stars and other planets.

Space travel.

Space travel refer to man’s attempt to explore to the region of outer space through the use of rockets, robots and other devices that help man to gain both knowledge and experience of the nature and conditions of outer space. Space vehicles are also known as spacecraft. They are used for transporting humans, animals and cargo to and from orbit around the earth.
