Specific objectives: At the end of the students should be able to

1. Explain the following

1. Hydrocarbon
2. Homologous series
3. Isomerism

2. Draw the structure of different isomers
3. Differentiate between aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbon
4. Give the IUPAC names of hydrocarbons

                                 HYDROCARBONS

Hydrocarbons are the compounds produced by the chemical combination of carbon and hydrogen atoms only. Examples include: methane, CH₄, propane, C₃H₈, benzene, C₆H₆, butane,C₄H₁₀ etc. the main source of hydrocarbon is crude oil.
