Definition and full meaning of www
The full meaning of WWW is World Wide Web. It is a series of servers that have been interconnected through hypertext. Hypertext is one method of presenting information in which certain items are highlighted. By selecting one such highlighted text, you can obtain more information on the same topic. The “Web” offers another service called uniform resource locator which allows you to locate data resident anywhere on the web.
Brief history of WWW
The World Wide Web was developed by British physicist and computer scientist. Timothy Berners-Lee as a project within the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva, Switzerland, Berners-Lee combined several existing ideas into a single system to make it easier for physicist to use data on the internet. Most important he added multimedia – the ability to include graphics to the hyperlink concept found in a precious internet service known as gopher. Berners-Lee had begun working with hypertext in the early 1980s. As early prototype implementation of the Web became operational at CERN in 1989, and the idea quickly spread to universities and the rest of the world.
Basic terminologies
(a) Webserver
This is a program that responds to requests from web browsers to retrieve resources. It is used to refer to the computer that runs the server program.
(b) Homo Page
This is the first document displayed when you open a website. It contains links to other pages or other sites.
(c) HTML (Hypertext Markup Language)
It is used to format a web document
(d) HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol)
It means Hyper Text Transfer Protocol. It defines how messages are fitted anti transmitted, and what actions Web servers and browsers should take in response to various commands.
It is a location where web information is collected and made available wily to anyone with access to the internet.
A browser is a program which allows a computer to access information in internet. Opera Mini, Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Explorer, Mozilla fox, Safari are some examples of browsers. They use graphical user interface (GUI) for searching, finding, viewing and managing information, browser unveils the content of WWW.
A document designed for viewing in a web browser. It is often written in HTML (Hypertext Markup Language).

Protocols
A set of rules and regulations that determines how data is transmitted in telecommunication and computer network. It is the language for networked computers.
Uses/Benefits of WWW
(a) It creates a presence
Many organizations use the web to advertise their products and services all over the globe.
(2) Networking ‘
Organizations use it to establish presence on line. It makes them stay in contact with future clients and customers
It is used to exchange basic information. Information such as type of business, hours of business etc
People can access your product and services all over the world any Hi of the day or night. This means there are no time barriers once you are in the World Wide Web.

There are many software for web development. They include Adode Dream weaver, Studio 5, Web easy Professional, Web method Microsoft FrontPage. However for the purpose of this book we are to use Microsoft FrontPage as our web development software. Microsoft FrontPage is an application program for developing maintaining web. It is a web creation and management tool which require no programming knowledge for website development. It also ha feature What You See Is What You Get (WYSIWYG) interface. This enables the user to see an accurate representation of the web page as it she creates and edits the page without the need to open it in a browser.
Start up your Microsoft FrontPage software and click on File then select New.

Remember to save all your web pages in the folder My Webs located at: C./Documents and Settings \*user*\My Documents/My Webs.

When you have completed designing your webside, slick on File, then select Open Site and then you will need to find and select the My Webs folder in your computer.

You will now see a Folder list to the left of your design window which will show all of the files in your My Webs folder.

Click on File, then select Publish Site. This will display the Remote Web Site Properties and select the FTP option. Enter the publish destination as: ftp://ftp.yourdomain.com (replace yourdomain.com with your own domain name). Then click OK

You will then be prompted to enter the Name: and Password

FrontPage will establish a connection to your server which will open the Publish Web window. Simply select files that you would like to publish then click Public Web Site. Your website files will be published to the server.
