SS 2 3RD TERM PHYSICS SCHEME OF WORK                         

WEEKS

CONTENTS

1.

Reflection of light at plane surfaces. Laws of reflection and application of reflection at plane surfaces e.g. formation of images by plane mirrors, simple periscope, sextant, etc.

2.

Reflection of light by curved mirrors. Formation of images by curved mirrors. Applications. Simple problems on curved mirrors.

3.

Refraction of light through rectangular glass block; Laws of refraction; real and apparent depth; critical angle and total internal reflection.

4.

Refraction of light through a triangular glass prism; Angle of deviation; Dispersion of white light and production of pure spectrum; Recombination of the components of a spectrum.

5.

Refraction of light through converging and diverging lenses. Formation of images by converging and diverging lenses; Simple problems on lenses; Application of lenses; Compound microscopes, telescopes, simple camera and film projector.

6.

The Human eye; Comparison of the eye and the camera; defects of vision and correction of defects

7.

Sound waves: Sources, transmission of sound; noise and music; Pitch, loudness and quality.

8.

Forced Vibrations. Resonance, harmonics and overtones. Speed of sound in solid, liquid and air. Determination of the speed of sound in air using the resonance tube method. The sonometer.

9.

Velocity of sound- Its measurement; stationary waves; application of sound waves. Wind instruments: clarinet, flute, saxophone, trumpet. String instruments: Guitar, sonometer, piano. Percussion instruments: Drum, bell, the talking drum.  Echoes and their application; Hearing aids.

10.

Energy and Society- sources of energy; Renewable and non-renewable energy; Uses of energy; energy and development; Energy diversification and conservation. Environmental impact of energy use. Global warming and greenhouse effect; Oil spillage; energy crises.

11.

Conversion of energy: Conversion of mechanical energy to electrical energy, heat and sound energy, etc. Conversion of electrical energy to heat, mechanical and light energies, etc. Radiation energy to electrical, chemical energy to electrical, mechanical energy. Devices used in energy conversion.

12.
