WEEK2:               SCALE

Specific objectives: students should at the end of the lesson, be able to

  1. Define scale
  2. Mention the forms of scale
  3. Description of scale  (major scale)
  4. Instructional procedure: Keyboard, piano or organ

SCALE:  The term scale is defined as eight notes arranged in ascending and descending order. it is arranged in alphabetical order from any note and ending with its octave for example movement from A to A is a scale, from C to C, G to G and so on.

Kinds of scale

We have four major kinds of scale namely.

  1. Diatonic scale
  2. Pentatonic scale
  3. Whole scale
  4. Chromatic scale

Diatonic scale: This is an arrangement of eight notes into five tones and two semitones. Diatonic has two types namely: major and minor scale

Major scale: is a scale with five tones and two semitones. The semitones occur between the 3rd and 4th , 7th and 8th degrees of the scale.

Minor scale: Minor scale also consist of eight notes that is built upon the 6th degree (submediant) of the scale that is to say that a minor scale begins three semitones below the tonic of a major scale “lah” in solfa notation is the note.

There are three forms of minor scales, namely:  Natural minor, Harmonic minor, and Melodic minor.

  4. Mention all the forms of minor scale that you have studied.
