WEEK3:              SCALE (Contd)

Specific objective: student should at the end of lesson be able

(1)             To know how to determine or know a relative minor keys

(2)             Mention all forms of minor scale

(3)             Construct one form of the minor scales

 

1.     Natural Minor Scale: This consist of eight notes built upon the 6th degree with the semitones occurring between 2nd and 3rd and 6th, 7th degree in ascending and descending order.

(1)             Harmonic minor: This consist of eight notes with the semitones in 2nd, 3rd , 6th, 7th and 8th degree in ascending and descending order

It is important to note that like natural minor scale, harmonic minor maintains the same scale pattern both in ascending and descending order.

(2)             Melodic Minor Scale: This consists of eight notes built upon the 6th degree, with the semitones occurring between the 2nd, 3rd, 7th and 8th degree in ascending then in descending between the 6th, 5th, 3rd and 2nd degree. The 6th and 7th descending are raised to a semitone in ascending and lowered in descending.

(3)             Chromatic Scales:  This is scale built and moves in semitones only. It consists of thirteen notes built entirely on semitones.

(4)             Pentatonic Scale: This is a scale of five tones arrangement, no semitones.

Evaluation:

1.     What are differences in the three forms of minor scale; Natural, melodic and harmonic scales.

2.     Sing the A minor natural scale in ascending and descending order.

3.     Chromatic scale is scale of how many semitones?

4.     Pentatonic scale is a five tone scale, true or false?

Assignment:

1.     Construct an E melodic minor scale in ascending and descending order.

2.     Construct a pentatonic scale in C

3.     Discuss the differences between a melodic and harmonic minor scale.
