FORMS OF DRUG ABUSE
The forms of drugs abuse include:
1. Use of Stimulants:- These are drugs that increase the activity of the body temporarily. There are two types of stimulants. These are:
i. Naturally occurring stimulants, they includes tobacco, tea, kola nuts, coffee and cannabis.
ii. Synthetic substances or drugs:- These are substances or drugs produced by man in the laboratory from other substances they include amphetamine like Librium, Diazepam and Phenobarbitone
2. Use of Phencyclidine or Mescaline:- These drugs produce hallucination and loss of contact with reality. These drugs cause hallucination and loss of contact with reality.
3. Use of Hallucinogens: These are drugs that may cause perception of sight or sound that are not actually present or real, these drugs are marijuana and LSD.
4. Use of Opiates: There are drugs like codeine or morphine which people over use to treat pain.
5. Use of Apodes: There are drugs like heroine and methadone use for increasing activities or to be in high spirit.
6. Use of inhalants: These include gasoline, spray, pains, which people abuse because of the sweet aroma.
7. Use of Amphetamines: There are drugs for fatigue, obesity or mild depression but people abuse this prescription given to them by the doctor.
CONSEQUENCES OR EFFECTS OF DRUGS ABUSE:
Drugs has negative effects or consequences at various levels, these level includes:
i. Consequences to the individual
ii. Consequences to the community
iii. Consequences to the nation
iv. Consequences to the International community.
The Negative Effects or Consequences To The Individual Includes The Following:-
1. The individual may suffer brain damage or mental disorder.
2. It can lead to heart, lungs, liver, kidney and spleen infection.
3. It can lead to bareness and infertility
4. It can lead the individual to drop-out.
5. It can result to this becoming a cultist, rapist and end up a social casually.
6. It can also cause accident leading to destruction of lives and property.
7. It can also lead to broken homes such as separation and divorce.
The Consequences to The Community:
The consequences the community that is infested with drug abuse must suffer are:
1. Frequent violent acts such as fighting with dangerous weapons, hoodlums will take over the community.
2. Drug abuse retards the economic activities of the community due to laziness and idleness of the drug addicts.
3. The progress of the community is put at stake because it bring about damaging generalizations or stigma.
Consequences To The Nation:
The nation will suffer the following:
1. Their citizens will be expected to various security checks.
2. Backwardness of the community for a long period.
3. There will be weak and ineffective leadership in the nation.
4. There will be economic stagnation due to lots of evil acts in the nation.
5. Many innocent citizens end up in prison.
6. Building of rehabilitation centers for drug causalities will become impossible.
Consequences To The International Community:
i. Countries know for drug production and peddlers are always in the news.
ii. Such countries are considered most in bilateral and multilateral relationships.
iii. No free trade is allowed into such countries, this implies that some natural endowment not found in the country would be hard to import.
iv. There would be malnourishment, ignorant, incurable mental in flexibility.
v. There would be short life span of the citizens and low level of development.
Evaluation Questions:
1. Identify any five forms of drug abuse.
2. State three (3) consequences each of drug abuse on the following.
i. Individual
ii. Community and
iii. Nation.
