WESTERN MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS
Specific Objectives: Students should at the end of the lesson be able to
(1) Define an Orchestra
(2) Know the different families of Orchestra instruments.
(3) Know the classification of Orchestra instrument.
Western Musical Instruments: These are the instruments played in the Orchestra with strings, woodwind brass and percussion belonging to the family.
Classification of Orchestra Instrument:
Orchestra instruments are classified into four families namely, string, woodwind, brass, percussion.
(1) Strings Family: Violin, viola, cello and double bass .In string family, violin plays the part of soprano, viola plays alto, cello plays tenor while double bass plays bass.
(2) Woodwind: Woodwind instruments are categorized as follows; flute, piccolo, recorder, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, contra bassoon and English horn.
(3) Brass: The brass family include; trumpet, cornet, trombone, euphonium, tuba and French horn. Saxophone that is also grouped into this family recently has never been part of brass instrument.
Saxophones are categorized into the following:
a. Alto saxophone
b. Soprano saxophone
c. Tenor saxophone
d. Baritone sax
(4) Percussion: Percussion constitutes drums, (snare drum), (bass drum) (tom tom) tuba (kettledrum) (cymbals) (bells) (celesta) (triangle) (gong) (tambourine) (xylophone) (Glockenspiel). These instruments are played by stroking
